What happened in chapter 23 - the epilogue?:
A year has passed - Emi’s moved to San Diego to attend culinary school. She’s been working at her family’s restaurant and avoiding big family gatherings. Anywhere Cristina and Sydney might show up. But she has to help cater Angel and Sarah’s anniversary party, and they’re both there. Sydney’s even wearing a fedora, which totally isn’t like him, and Emi realizes he must be wearing it for Cristina. It’s too much for her and she leaves early.
But Sydney’s mother shows up at Emi’s house, determined to tell her the truth about what was happening. Sydney was lying to her - he was never with Cristina like that, and the hat wasn’t for her. It was covering a scar from a surgery. He left her because they found a tumor, like the one that killed his father, and he didn’t want her to suffer like his mother had and Cristina had when their husbands died. He’s having another surgery in a few days to try to have it removed.
Emi is by his bedside when Sydney wakes up. She loves him and she’s not going anywhere.
